Periodontal Care
Bacteria are constantly growing in the mouth. They can attach themselves to the teeth and multiply and grow, thus forming plaque. Plaque can be removed through proper brushing and flossing. If not, it can be calcified and harden into tartar (also called calculus). Tartar can attaches to the teeth, above as well as below the gum line. It can only be removed by professional cleaning. Plaque and tartar contain bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease or periodontal problems.
There are different levels of periodontal problems. Gingivitis, which is a mild type of problem, is the inflammation of the gum tissue. The gum line is red and swollen. It is caused by plaque and tartar on the tooth surface. Regular Cleaning cleans plaque and tartar above the gum line or just a little under the gum line. Gingivitis is easily reversible with improved oral hygiene and regular cleaning. Periodontal Disease is a more serious gum problem. It is a gradually destructive process that breaks down the bone and gingiva that support the teeth. It can present itself through bad breath, bleeding, and/or receding gums, loose teeth. But the disease starts long before any symptoms appear. Usually it can be first detected clinically as inflamed gingiva, periodontal pockets, plaque and tartar under the gums, and visible bone lost on the X-Ray.
Periodontal Treatment cleans away plaque and tartar below the gum line. It will stop the gingiva inflammation and make the gingiva healthy again. As a result, the destructive process will be stopped, gingiva may reattach to tooth surface, and the bone may grow back in certain areas. Periodontal treatment includes deep cleaning (scaling & root planning) and periodontal surgery for severe cases. Unlike other offices, we also provide Laser Periodontal Surgery (read more), which minimizes cutting, trauma, and post-operational pain.
